Mondeuse Noir from Savoie
Savoie is a picturesque, snow-capped mountainous region with rolling hills that hug the western Alps. This is where you will find “apres-ski” (ski chalet) light bodied whites Jacquère & Chasselas to richer age worthy Altesse & Roussanne, Crémant de Savoie and notable reds from Mondeuse Noir and Persan. One of the most respected domaines is the 3rd generation Quenard’s family estate. Their 22 acres of steep, stony limestone terrain, micro climates and elevation of the region adds freshness and lively minerality to their wines. Their focus is on Bergeron, Jacquère, Mondeuse, and Altesse. They are certified Haut Valeure Environnementale, natural fermentation, make low yielding, quality wines are highly regarded.

Chignin Mondeuse Vielles Vignes 2019
Savoie AOC, France
Mondeuse dates back to the Roman times and is one of the many endemic grapes of this region. The 2.8 hectares of 70 year old vines are hand harvested, some whole bunches are added to the must, macerated for 12 to 15 days followed by 12 months in foudres and are unfiltered.
Pours into the glass a deep ruby purple color.
Swirl and this very aromatic wine has sour cherry, plum, raspberry, blueberry, violets, dusty earth, leather and spice.
Sip and your are greeted with bouncy red fruits, violets, an earthy savoriness, hints of black pepper and smoke. A medium bodied wine with complexity & crips acidity typical of Mondeuse Noir as well as considerable fine tannins and low alcohol of 12% that you can still taste 5 minutes later. This is a wine to be quaffed and savored, with or without food.
It’s a lithe, delicate and sexy wine that would love to be paired with aged cheeses (cheddar, gouda or pecorino), grilled portobello mushroom burgers, peppered beef stew or a mixed game ragu.
