A Taste of Terroir: Exploring HDV Ygnacia

Get ready to be wowed by the HDV Ygnacia Pinot Noir 2020! This wine is a true expression of Napa Valley terroir. For those who aren’t aware, HDV is short for "Hyde de Villaine," a collaboration between the Hyde and de Villaine families, both of whom have incredibly passion and strong ties to the wine industry. The name "Ygnacia" itself pays homage to the name of the vineyard block where these grapes are cultivated. This particular site is known for its unique terroir, contributing to the distinctive characteristics of the wine. Like people, a name gives a unique identity and character to the vineyard and wine.

This wine is a harmonious blend of 6 heritage Pinot Noir clones, a culmination of Larry Hyde's 40 years of passionate farming. It represents his unwavering pursuit of excellence, showcasing the finest Pinot Noir selections of the New World. Barrel aged for 18 months with 15% new French Oak.

HDV Ygnacia Pinot Noir 2020

I've always loved sharing a bottle of HDV with friends – it always makes for an unforgettable wine moment. I cannot say enough wonderful things about their wines, they consistently impress me. Prepare for a sensory experience…..

Pours into the glass with a captivating ruby hue, clear and bright, visually enticing, definitely a wine you’d be excited to sip.

Bringing the glass to your nose is where the magic really begins. Bringing the glass to your nose is where the magic really begins. You’ll be greeted with an aromatic bouquet bursting with fresh red cherries and plums, juicy raspberries and cola with subtle fluttering of rose petals. Then, as you delve deeper, you’ll notice enticing hints of wild strawberries that add a playful sweetness. There's this great earthy component, reminiscent of a quiet forest floor and minerality just after a rain.

That first sip, oh my word, that first sip, pure silk, a rich silky texture with flavors that echo the nose. Those vibrant fruit flavors continue here with cherries and raspberries stealing the spotlight, brightened by zesty acidity that keeps it lively. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, providing structure without overwhelming the fruit in this medium bodied wine. You’ll experience exciting layers - the charm of black tea and a mineral quality that adds depth. Catch delicate herbal notes of thyme and rosemary adding a lovely touch. A bit of vanilla and gentle toastiness from the oak aging sneaks in, balancing everything beautifully. And as for the finish? It’s elegant and lingering, with finely woven tannins that offer a smooth exit. You’re left with a lovely remembrance of fruit and a gentle spice of cinnamon and clove that invites you to take another sip—just when you thought the adventure was over

In short, an absolute gem. Los Carneros sophistication at its best. HDV’s commitment to crafting exceptional wines as always shines through.

Pair with duck confit, roasted salmon or on its own because it is too good not to enjoy. I am thankful I have another bottle of this vintage and the 2021 waiting for me to adore another time.
