Zen For Dutcher Crossing Zinfandel

Zen For Dutcher Crossing Zinfandel

Can I Zinterest you in a Zinful Zen experience with Dutcher Crossing Bernier Sibary Vineyard Zinfandel ? It would be a sin not to talk about this ZIN.

Before we begin our Dutcher Crossing Zinjourney, it is important to debunk the myth which came first, Zinfandel or Primitivo OR is it one in the same?

The University of California at Davis, conducted a study from the early 1990s to 2002, known as Zinquest, which definitively established that Zinfandel is genetically identical to the Italian grape Primitivo. While this research settled the debate about Zinfandel's relationship to Primitivo, it also raised new questions about its historical origins. We know that Primitivo originated in Croatia, where it was called by different names like Tribidrag and Crljenak Kastelanski. However, the exact path Zinfandel took to reach the United States remains uncertain. It's possible that Zinfandel arrived in America directly from Italy, or it might have traveled through another route, such as Croatia or Austria. This leaves us with the question: is American Zinfandel descended from Primitivo cuttings, Tribidrag, or a combination of both?

Over the years, Zinfandel has gained a reputation for its bold flavors, high alcohol content, and versatility.   While its origins may be European, Zinfandel has become synonymous with American winemaking. Its ability to produce wines ranging from fruity and easy-drinking to complex and age-worthy has made it a beloved varietal among both winemakers and consumers.

Pours into the glass a deep ruby red sensation with hints of garnet.

Upon swirling, the nose is filled with a complex bouquet of ripe red and dark fruits, blackberry, raspberry, and cherry pie all in one. Underneath spice emerges, both savory and sweet, notes of cinnamon and clove along with sage, and dried marjoram. Lets not forget Zinfandel’s favorite friend, oak - the caramelized vanilla, toasty oak and rich buttery caramel.

The Zinsational first sip is warm, full-bodied and lush with flavors that mirror the nose. A very important mention - Zinfandel tends to be high on the alcohol due to the grape’s naturally high sugar levels. In this case, the 14.3% abv is seamless, there is no burn or heat. The concentrated fruit is balanced by a fresh acidity that provides structure. The spice notes of cinnamon and clove continue to evolve on the palate, adding complexity. There's a subtle sweetness that integrates well with the acidity, creating a harmonious balance. Tannins are softly present but well-integrated . The finish leaves a lasting impression, long and lingering on bittersweet chocolate, peppercorn and star anise with an oak hum tickle.

What’s so fun about Zinfandel is that it showcases the fruit and spice equally, it is clear after one sip why ou should drink more Zinfandel. It’s ZINtastic, has serious power, food friendly and oh so moorish.
