Akberg Wine Papazkarasi

Akberg Wine Papazkarasi

Introducing Papazkarası, an ancient and intriguing grape variety native to Turkey, specifically the Thrace region. Its name, which translates to "priest's black," with suggested history of Greek origins, possibly dating back to before the Eastern Roman Empire. It was once widely planted in southeastern Europe, but now primarily found in Turkey. It thrives in the Uskup region of Kirklareli, known for its decomposed granite soils and low yields. The grape yields low yielding, thick skinned grape and gets its color from he deep blue back berries that ripen late in the season.

Akberg Wine Büyükbağ Papazkarasi 2020

Akberg is located in the Aegean, not so very far from Ephesus. The winery brings in its Papazkarası grapes from Thrace from the Suloğlu area of Edirne. This was their first vintage with Papazkarası and was fermented in stainless steel to allow the grapes true character shine.

Pours into the glass a vibrant ruby with flashes of pomegranate, announcing its youthful energy. The first whiff brings a fragrant wave of black pepper and cardamom, punctuated by juicy bursts of black cherries and raspberries. A whisper of violets adds a touch of elegance, while notes of damp earth and sun-baked clay ground the aroma in the Aegean terroir.

The initial sip explodes with juicy fruit, a kaleidoscope of black cherries, ripe plums, and tangy redcurrants. The bright acidity dances across the tongue, keeping the palate lively and refreshed. Then, the spice notes from the nose come alive, building with each sip. Black pepper, cardamom, and a hint of clove weave a warming tapestry against the backdrop of fruit. The wine boasts a peppery pep to its step, light and agile body. The oh so silky tannins provide a gentle grip, but ultimately melt away, leaving a smooth and elegant finish. The interplay of fruit, spice, and acidity is masterful, showcasing the unique character of Papazkarasi and the talent of Akberg's winemaking team.

This is an excellent red that can be chilled on a hot summer’s day, to accompany grilled lamb kebabs or roasted eggplant dip.

I judged with the winemaker Guney Kose at the Turkish Wine Challenge in May 2023 and it was awarded a Gold Medal at this years event. Congratulations!
