Two things grabbed my attention when I saw this wine - 1) Very limited production and 2) Jon David who represents the highest of quality specializing in the Val de Loire. Damien Laureau is a new generation of organic, all natural free spirited winemakers. He uses A blend of 3 terroirs in Savennière , planted in schist and purple sandstone (known as rhyolite), imparts a powerful mineral quality. Side note these terroirs are adjacent to the famous Coulée de Serrant, hint you are in for a treat. 12 months in 400L French oak barrels, 5-10% new, then 11 months in tank before bottling unfined & unfiltered.
Liquid golden goddess in the glass. The intense aromatics reach your senses as you pour. A vibrant purity in your presence of lemon curd, jasmine and lime blossom, honey, beeswax, mushrooms, straw, dried apricot, quince paste, dried apple, cream and lemon pith. Very creamy mouth coating texture is backed by equally mouthwatering acidity and elegant richness. The flinty mineral terroir is interwoven with salted hazelnuts, brioche, vanilla cream, honeyed apricot, floral and pineapple marmalade, just a wow wine that evolves and lingers for an eternityβ¦..It packs an elegant punch on so many levels. What a thrilling discovery.
I admit this is one of those I could NOT put my glass down. I was so enthralled because itβs so damn good.
However if I had to pair it with Iβd pair it with roasted lobster tails, crab cakes with citrus aioli or a classic freshly shucked oysters.
